I have been a CPS educator for the past 15+ years. I have served in the capacity of the classroom teacher, literacy coach, assistant principal, Instructional Support Leader, and more recently a Data Strategist and Test Coordinator. With the many challenges that we face as educators, it's comforting to know that we don't have to settle for less engaging instruction. A powerful practice I firmly believe in, when it comes to teaching students how to read is "structured literacy". This is one of the best approaches when teaching foundational skills.
